The Weary Kind from soundtrack for Crazy Heart
“Your lovers won’t kiss
It’s too damn far from your fingertips
You are the man that ruined her world”
Comment: The character in the movie, Bad Blake (played by Jeff Bridges who won an Academy Award for portrayal) is a former star who is down on his luck, alcoholic singer / songwriter. “You are the man who ruined the world”, takes me to that place where you feel like nothing you do is right. Nobody seems to recognize all of the good things you do; but they will never give you grace for the mistakes you make.
Knee Deep, Zac Brown Band and Jimmy Buffett
“Wrote a note said be back in minute
Bought a boat and I sailed off in it
Don’t think anybody gonna miss me anyway”
Comment: Appeals to the freedom in your soul. One day you could simply walk away into the sunset and enjoy a simple life on the beach or water. Also, throw away all of the “things” that you believe are essential or impactful in your work, you will be replaced and forgotten soon enough.
Shallows, from A Star is Born. Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper
“In all the good times I find myself
Longin’ for a change
And in the bad times I fear myself”
Comment: These short lyrics are very insightful to someone trying to be the best version of themself vs. the self loathing of fearing you are not good enough. When things are going well, your brain tells yourself you can do anything. When you are down or on the bottom end of a manic episode, you fear what you might do to yourself to end pain.
Into the Mystic, Van Morrison
“Hark, now hear the sailors cry
Smell the sea and feel the sky
Let your soul and spirit fly
Into the mystic”
Comment: There are so many amazing Van Morrison songs. This song sparks a spiritual feeling, a transcendence just from these few lyrics and music. I feel close to a beautiful friend and family members I’ve lost, it is an ethereal feeling with loved ones who have passed away..
