Stand Watch
Alex Odren, August 2020
I stood on the wall at Jericho
doing what my king ordered / Protecting my city our people
from invaders who were the enemy / they damned our temples
Until the horns blew loud and the walls came crashing down
We died never knowing we were on the wrong ground
I’ve been on the impregnable wall of Troy for ten years
Protect our home from the invaders we vow to our kin
Hooray, We have sent the invaders home / they left us a tribute for their sin
We are honored to live in the time of Achilles and Hector / we celebrate the night
Never expected my death on the wall to be in the back / out of sight
We stand on the wall / day and night
we stand right or wrong / from where we were born
we protect our family our country / no-one will suffer on our watch
We will die on the wall / so you may sleep safe at night
I stand on the wall of our thousand year city / cannons in sight
We are the last of the Empire / our faith in the East / our right
This is where I was born / my family my history / we hold on
The enemy burst through the gate / I saw Constantine wade into the breach gone
We fell with our king / our family our city our lives / tomorrow new laws belong
The Ottomans took the city / for it is now their family / now time for their songs
I stand behind the wall with others in blue / an attack is coming over fields a new
Our grand army fights a righteous war / all men are created equal / freedom for all
The mass of grey marches with courage toward the wall / but they are cut down by row in a bloody pall
The men who fought this day are all brave souls / the men in grey / their reason was flawed
We have won the battle the war did pause / to this day we still fight against the same lost cause
My wall is our island, the last of free men in Europe
I look out from on the cliffs of Dover / my spitfire ready for wheels up
We await attack by dark evil more threatening to humanity than we imagined
Our strong leader tells them we will never surrender / we must fight on until help is rendered
We knock the enemy from the sky / invasion will not happen while we still fly
Never have so few saved so many is our destiny
I went down in the channel / a death dive my fate
Our sacrifice for freedom / the light of good over the darkness / tyranny abate
So many have stood on the walls of Jerusalem alternating their hold on the clock
Over thousands of years / we each had a tour protecting our flock
Jews, Gentiles, Romans, Muslims and Christians through history have answered the call
Temple Mount is our holy place, our holy place, our holy place / can it be shared by all
A holy city of peace to so many / but the legacy of war carries on steady
We have all died on the wall / who is right / who is wrong / continues on in posterity
Now I stand on the wall as my father before me
He kept us safe from threats abroad / it is harder to know who threatens us now
No king, emperor, our demagogue should rule our land / we swear allegiance to an ideal greater than a man
We serve our watch to the ideal of liberty, rule of law and the will of the people
We stand watch so government of the people by the people for the people will not disappear from earth
As I look inside and outside from my post , I feel the trickle of a tear run down my face
I may fall again but at the hand of my brother / Grant me strength to continue this endless race
We stand on the wall / day and night
we stand right or wrong / from where we were born
we protect our family our country / no-one will suffer on our watch
We will die on the wall / so you may sleep safe at night /
Lord isn’t there a way we could live in peace?
My watch is ended.
