The worldly warn you the years fly by, life is the lesson to understand why
When I saw your message my heart skipped a beat
Is it today, tomorrow, or twenty years i still feel the heat
My mind snapped back to that time we shared
We were young, happy, in our close group we paired
Beginning our lives, let the dice fly high its all we cared
You said everything right, but I let fear take my nerve
That may have been God’s plan, for I fell short of what you deserve
All my life travels through years of ups and downs
I was there again, your smile came back profound
Remember how we talked about two ships pass in the night
We tried to line up on the same course, so close to getting it right
One yes or one no, even let’s wait will change a path
So slightly at first but growing distance is my epitaph
What if we could change it, go back and make a different choice
Live a new life and see which had the best voice
but that is a fools errand
Life always starts right now / this minute
The past we shared was magical / your sweet smile had no limit
You said everything right, but I let fear take my nerve
That may have been God’s plan, for I fell short of what you deserve
I remember that last night in your place after everyone left
We camped out with a blanket, candles and a bottle of wine
Laughing, talking, dreaming about a future that was kind
We gave in to sleep wrapped in that blanket on the floor
The next morning you were gone, tear drop stains on the note pinned to the door
What might have been, what might have been, echos in my mind
